Fine China

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were out shopping; getting ready for a New Year’s Eve party.

We had made a list of things that we needed and one item on that list was “paper plates”. I can still remember both of us hurrying down the aisle of the store, discussing the virtues of “paper” verses “Styrofoam.”  We ended up with Styrofoam. Why? It was cheaper and we were just going to throw them out anyway.

Now look, we've never had a lot of money, but I've never in my entire life saved a used paper plate. I throw it away, of course, like you probably do. And I don't feel any great sense of loss or regret about it either. No, it doesn't bother me at all. But we do have some other plates in our house, we keep them in a cabinet in our dining room and we save them for special occasions. We don’t throw these away; they are the best we own.  We carefully wash them and when we're finished, we carefully put them away. If you drop them … you're out of the family! Just kidding. J

Now, what's the difference? Paper plates are cheap, practically worthless, right? You throw them away.   Fine china on the other hand is expensive; it's too valuable to throw away.   Which plate do you feel like today? I think most people feel like paper plates. They've been put down, hurt, tossed aside, ignored, maybe even abused, and they feel pretty worthless.

If you think you are not worth very much you're wrong about who you are! Anyone who has treated you like you're not worth much doesn't know who you are either.

God didn't make any paper plates!  And here's how He feels about you . . .

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: (Ex 19:5)

If you will obey His voice, God says you are a treasure, you are fine china! You're not trash! You're too valuable to throw away. In Ephesians 2:10, Paul says, "We are God's workmanship."

And God’s work is heavenly work.

So don't believe the lies in your brain that keep telling you that you're a cheap paper plate, that you're worthless, and need to be thrown away. Jesus says you’re an extraordinary treasure reserved for special purposes. If you feel like you're not worth much then pay a visit to the cross where Jesus died for you. That's how much God thinks you're worth. Please, . . . live like the treasure that Jesus says you are.
