The Rescue Doctor

Dear Sirs, I recently acquired a BC / Spaniel mix that I have named Sam. He was found roaming the streets. His age is estimated to be10 months.

The reason that I am writing is that I can't help but notice sadness in his eyes. When I first got him he would flinch if you approached him too quickly. He is always looking at me to make sure he isn't doing anything wrong. He doesn't show initiative to do anything without permission. I feel his spirit has been broken. I don't want him to live in fear of doing anything. He doesn't need my permission to be a happy puppy. I am really bothered by that sadness deep within him. Perhaps, I expect too much too soon?

Sadly, In Tears

Dear In Tears,

We see this in rescued dogs a lot, as well as abused children. I would say that you might be expecting too much too soon, since it can take a long time to rebuild a dog's confidence in humanity. Some never quite recover. This is a long road to walk - filled with fits and starts of positive gains and periods of regression. Broken spirits can be mended, like other broken items, with time and love.

The Rescue Doctor

Too hurt to trust anyone. That's not just something that happens to a pet. . . it happens to people - a lot. Maybe it's how you feel. Somewhere along the way you've been hurt or abandoned, or betrayed, or mistreated. And like that little dog, you're afraid to let anyone get close.

There is someone who is looking in your direction, someone with outstretched arms, not to hurt you but to hold you, to heal you. It's Jesus. Listen to these words:

"The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;" (Isa 61:1,2)

Now, I know that word "trust" is a hard one after what you've been through, but you can't just go on alone; hurting and hiding. Jesus loves you so much that He gave everything He had for you, He's the One person you can finally trust. You've been looking and longing for that person for a long time. I don't know what you've been through, but Jesus does and as He comes to you today - don't run from His open arms. Jesus is the healer of broken hearts and broken lives. He's the healing that your heart has always wanted. Let Jesus rescue you today!

Jesus cares and so do I,
