Solid Rock

Once upon a time there was a very short man who wanted to hammer a nail in his wall to hang a picture. He tried standing on a chair, but it wasn’t high enough.

His wife, hearing him mumbling to himself, suggested that he put a box on the chair, but he was still too short. Finally his wife placed a stool on top of the box, that was on top of the chair.
Balancing himself very gingerly on this precarious ladder, the do-it-yourself picture hanger began to tap cautiously with his hammer.
"Why don’t you hit it hard?" his wife asked. "You’ll never drive the nail in that way!"
The very short man looked down from his perch and replied, "How can a man hit anything hard on a shaky foundation like this?"
In the Bible the Lord reminded Solomon that if he wanted to establish a great kingdom that would live on through his descendants, he would have to build it on the solid foundation of integrity.

And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel. (1 Ki 9:4-5)

The only way Solomon could be confident that his family would sit upon the throne in the future would be for him to live according to God’s commandments and statues.
Any time we try to find a substitute for integrity, we will find ourselves standing on a shaky foundation, just like the "very short man". Some other words for integrity are honor, honesty and virtue.
We can not hope to build a solid Christian life with only emotional experiences; we have to obey God’s Word. We can not bring up a Christian family that will endure unless it’s done in uprightness of heart. Only integrity is able to provide the solid foundation that God will honor through the ages.
What are you attempting to build today? Is it a family? A marriage? A life? Make sure your integrity is on the level. Be sure that everything you do is consistent with God’s Word. This will not only provide a firm foundation for yourself but will be a blessing to your children as well.
